Manitoba talks of Europe

Visit us at Manitoba Missionfest February 1-3, 2013. Manitoba has almost 6,000 of the 239,000 international students in Canada. Our friendliness can warm the heart of any student. The theme of Missionfest this year is Europe. While Europe does not represent a large percentage of our international students in Manitoba, we want to be prepared to give those who do come a big welcome. Come visit our booth at Church of the Rock in the sanctuary this weekend.

Christmas & Culture

Christmas is still one month away. Before Christmas happens there are end term essays to write and exams to study for. However, in Canada, you will already see shopping malls decorating and radio stations playing Christmas music. See & experience the essence of Christmas by attending an ISMC Christmas event in your city. The first one is starting this Friday. All international students, visiting scholars and their friends are welcome. Check the Christmas Party tab for details.

Cultural Experience Trip to China

In our four years of International student ministry, over half of our student friends have come from mainland China. Not having had any experience with Asian students put us at a disadvantage in understanding their culture, worldview, and family backgrounds. So when I discovered ISMC would help me take a Cultural Experience (CE) trip to China, I was thrilled.

My own reading, and what I had gathered from students helped somewhat prepare me for the trip, but 15 days there was life-impacting and gave me a better understanding of how Chinese students view the world as well as what they carry with them as they enter a Canadian university.

The tourist spots were breath-taking, but the real highlights for me happened because of the experience and personal connections of the members of my team. Our team leader, Cam, had travelled China with another ISMC CE team and skillfully navigated us through 10 cities and innumerable travel hubs. Shifeng, a student intern with ISMC and the third member of our team, brought the wealth of his knowledge of the language, culture and history of China into the mix.

Doing this trip with a CE team made my visits to the homes and universities of 21 students more affordable, meaningful, and memorable.

Vancouver Friendship Partners Plant Seeds

Our annual Friendship Partner picnic at Belcarra Regional Park in the Vancouver BC area was so inspiring this year! We were low on the number of Canadians who could make it with their student friend, so opened it up to any student that wanted to come. The response was very enthusiastic! The Friendship Partners who did come got a taste of how much their involvement meant to these internationals. After a BBQ and sports on the lawn we gathered for a time of sharing impacts of the program. A visitor wistfully commented how good this would have been for her when she was an international student many years ago. Many students jumped right up to praise their Canadian friends for making such a difference to their life here. A lady from my church saw the significance of ‘planting seeds’ of God’s love through this interaction and was so grateful to have gotten involved. We thank the Lord for such a good event!
